Do you always get bored when travelling in public transport? Well, here you have the ultimate solution!
‘People do not enjoy travelling by public transport. Therefore we try to make the experience of our clients’ journey more interesting by opening stores at traffic hubs, adding televisions in busses, offering free newspapers. Recently we also started a test in which we place vending machines in buses.’
This is what a chief of the Dutch public transporter Connexxion told to a news broadcaster. Vending machines in buses! To give an experience to your journey? What kind of experience? The one we know from the Twix commercial in which one enjoys a relaxing break. Or an experience like the Frisk commercial from some years ago in which a guy got his nipples grow and move like hell? I don’t think so.
‘Why do you only add those unhealthy snacks?’, asked the radio-reporter? ‘This does not match the current trend in which we try to behave more responsible, lose weight and become more healthy?’ It was too hard for the company, which is specialized in transporting people from one point to another. Candy bars, refreshers and cookies do have long expiry dates. Apples and bananas don’t.
Does he expect his experiment to fail then? If he is true about his ‘people do not like to travel’ and if he really thinks food is the solution for this, then why not add fruit to the assortment? It will be sold out in a minute. But he knows bored people don’t want fruit. They want sweet stuff. They want calories!
And so he supports his clients becoming unhealthy and maybe even overweight. Because they can fill themselves up with unhealthy stuff all the time. First while they are waiting at the bus stop, then during the journey and - if they still didn’t have enough - again at the end stop.
What will be the next step? I suggest he starts to consider adding fitness machines in the buses.
